When I listen to some of your songs with my eyes closed, I see colors. Does this ever happen while you are writing them?

Mare Wakefield & Nomad responded on 09/01/2016
A

Very cool!! Sounds like you're talking about synesthesia. I don't have that, but I know some people do. For me, different chords definitely evoke different moods, regardless of the lyrics. For example, a minor triad can sound "sad" but a minor seven chord sounds less sad, and more "flow-y" like water (to me, anyway). Thanks for the question!!

Q

Is there one part of the country that seems to inspire you to write music more than another?

Mare Wakefield & Nomad responded on 09/01/2016
A

That's an interesting question. I think more songs are "finished" in Nashville. That's mostly because I have more time to write when we're home -- but as far as what part of the country I find inspiring and where more ideas are born … maybe the Southwest? I can remember writing our song "Breathe" at 2am in a hotel in Jerome, Arizona!

Q

I was re-listening to "Bernice & Bernadette" and got some of the same feeling of nostalgia as in some of Jacques Brel's songs or in "The Dutchman" by Michael Smith - great song and mental images.

A

Thanks so much! I take the comparison to Jacques Brel as the highest of compliments. I was unfamiliar with "The Dutchman" till just five minutes ago. What a beautiful song! I'm grateful for the introduction. And I'm glad you're enjoying "Bernice & Bernadette." Thanks for listening and also taking the time to write!

Q

What was the first song that impressed you enough to make you think "That's what I want to do"?

Mare Wakefield & Nomad responded on 07/05/2016
A

Hi Dave! :-) Great question! Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" made a pretty strong impression on me the first time I heard it. The melody stuck in my head and I wanted to sing it so badly but I didn't know the words (this was pre-internet). So I made up all new lyrics to her melody, just to be able to sing the song around the house. I was probably only 8 or 9 -- didn't really understand what "songwriting" was yet -- but I was definitely hooked from that moment on!
